Coping with stress
Do you worry a lot about things all the time? Do you get discouraged and become anxious when it seems that what you expect to happen may not manifest on time? Are you the kind of person who frets over everything or thinks of the worse possible scenario?
We create our own worries. Worrying is a product of our own imagination about something that we do not want to happen. The worries we create everyday contribute to our stress. In fact, the main reason why people get stressed-out is due to many things that they imagine they do not want to happen to them or to anybody else that they care about. We imagine things that cause us to feel anxious, distressed or troubled. The more we worry, the more bad scenarios we will create in our mind and the more that we will get stressed-out. If we continue to be in that terrible situation, sooner or later, our loved ones may find our name in the obituary. Oooopsss, knock on wood!!! Kidding aside, we really have to take this issue seriously.
We worry because we think that we are not or we cannot be in control of our situation, some things, events, feelings, sickness, those things that cause us to feel anxious. We have to learn how to let go of the things that we are not in control of. Let the Universe take care of that for us. Instead of thinking of the unwanted things or scenarios, stop, and think about the things that we want to happen in our lives or in the lives of the people we love. Always keep in mind one important principle of the law of the Universe, i.e, the law of detachment. When you detach yourself from the expected outcome of what you want to happen, it is more likely that you will get or receive what you truly want. Detachment from the outcome leaves no room for fears. But if you keep on thinking about the possibility that you will not receive the outcome as you expected, it is more likely that you will get the unwanted outcome or the opposite of what you want. It is because you are so attached to the outcome. And attachment provides enough room for your fear of failure. No matter how hard you work, you will always find it difficult to realize the results that you expect because of your fear that you may not succeed.
Six months ago, I thought of working on a business project. I regarded this as my most important project of all time that could change my whole life. I was very optimistic that I could make it a dream come true. I thought a lot about it. I did a lot of research on the subject until I was able to convince myself to proceed. And so, I setup my goal, I created my work plan, I setup my capital investment and proceeded accordingly.
Part of my plan was to burn some bridges behind so that I will not find a way to go back when extremely difficult situations arise. I made sure that nothing or no one would keep me from moving forward. I made it a point that I would design a plan meant to succeed.
My work started and during the first month, it went so well, I guessed so, because I saw some good results. However, after 3 months of working for almost 24 hours a day, I found out that I made a big mistake in my implementation plan. It resulted to a lot of reworks which means, I had to spend more than 24 hours a day just to get back on track. Although I was able to manage and keep my faith and my spirit high, I knew I wasted a lot of money, a lot of effort and precious time in that past three months and it had an impact on my target date. But I had no choice but to continue.
Two weeks later, I began counting the days left before my target date. I started to panic. I became anxious about the outcome. Apparently, I might not be able to meet my goal if I relax even a bit, albeit I have more than a month to realize the result of my work. I worked doubly hard. I kept that hard-working attitude for long. What I never detected during that past weeks is that I worked with fears in my heart. I worked hard because I was afraid that I might not meet the deadline that I set for myself. I worked hard because of the fear that in a couple of months time I would lose my investment. I feared that I might lose my self-respect, my wife and my children’s trust and my friends’ confidence in me. I was afraid that some people might laugh at me and talk about my failure. Most of all, I was afraid that the principle of manifesting desire process that I preach would only prove me wrong; that they might say it’s only a big hype. So many negative thoughts played in the back of my mind. I suspected that those were lies but they really got me so affected.
Like attracts like. More problems started to crop up and more reasons for me to be anxious became visible in my eyes and in my mind. My spirit went down so low. I forgot about my faith. I forgot about the wonderful feelings about the outcome of my work that I created in my heart before. I lost my patience. I lost the fire, my burning desire to achieve my dream, just because of that big mistake that I made. I began to concentrate my energy on my fear of the possibility of not meeting my goal. I allowed my mind to think mainly of negative thoughts. I followed my fears instead of my dreams. My fears caused me to spend many hours in front of my laptop with unclear mind and objectives. For this reason I continued to make mistakes after mistakes. I lost my direction. Most of the time I was physically present but mentally absent at work. I wasted so many hours worrying. I tried my best to be composed, to find myself and bring back my faith. But it was so difficult for me to do. I can always tell people what to do during difficult situations, but it’s really different when you are in that actual situation. However, in the midst of my difficult times, I knew that my negative condition was just temporary and it’s up to me if I would allow this condition to destroy me and my dream.
I thought of only two choices. I could opt to prolong my agony and let my worry stop me from moving forward until I become a complete failure and live a life full of doubts. But, I could also choose to stop these crazy things going on in my head, face the difficult challenges and move on. I thought that if I’d choose not to move on, I would never meet my goal. So, I thought I would rather go back to my senses, move forward and be brave enough to face my problems head on and do my best to meet my goal even with delays. It’s better late than never. With the right attitude or positive mental attitude, I can get the Law Of Attraction to work for me. Negative mentality will only bring misfortunes that will continue to block my success. To cut the story short, a few days later I was able to make up my mind. And now I’m back! I have no more doubts that I can succeed. I have no more worries, I have already buried them six feet below the ground. I am glad, I’m back! I am now more inspired and more determined to succeed than ever before. I learned a good lesson from this drama and it made me stronger. That’s one good thing when we go through difficulties, I always believe that the only purpose why we pass through some test is not to break us but to make us a much better and stronger person.
Sometimes, God tests our faith. I would like to cite a lesson on “Focus” discussed in Chapter IX of the “Manifesting Desire, the science of having what you truly want” book which I wrote, and I quote:
Focus
When you are after something, never lose your focus on it, so you can continue to run after it until you catch it. Direct your thoughts toward your goal at all times. Do not let these distractions disturb your focus. Distractions, whether good or bad, will derail you from the track you are running on.
Often times, problems or adversities distract you from moving on. They are the culprits that create your fear, worry and sorrow. They affect your senses negatively and make you more vulnerable to more problems (like energy attracts like energy). These problems will distract you from your intended path and will lead you to a bevy of problems.
I remember a story in the Bible when the disciples saw Jesus walking, while levitating on the sea. Peter got into trouble when his doubt ruled his being. “Lord, if it is you, ‘Peter replied’, tell me to come to you on the water. ‘Come’, He said. Then Peter got down out of the boat and walk on the water to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’. Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ He said, ‘why did you doubt?’
Mathew 14:28-31
Strong wind distracted Peter while walking on the water to reach Jesus. He feared the strong wind. This caused him to lose his focus and led him to panic. Panic led him to doubt. Soon as Peter doubted that he could continuously walk on the water going to Jesus, he began to sink.
Try your best not to lose your focus no matter what happens. Believe that you can do it and you will be able to do it. Focus on your goal and overcome your fear. Strong winds are your problems or adversities. Face them head on. Treat them as mere challenges and not problems.
Challenges call forth opportunities that can make things better for you. Your challenges can build your character. It is a good training opportunity for you to be strong. It strengthens your faith. If you think you can overcome challenges, do so by any means possible. If you cannot, just let go, ask God’s help and leave it to Him. Then, move on without looking back.
When you are inspired, you can see and feel your connection with the Universe, the one and only source of power. You become aware of the signs that God has heard your prayers. These signs are the proof that the Universe works for your desires. And because you can see the signs, you become more patient, more organized and more focused.
When we are stressed-out, we lose our focus and make mistakes. Worse case, we make terrible mistakes. It is important that we are calmed and composed in times of adversity if we want to succeed in achieving our goal. Even for simple objectives that we want to achieve each day, we need to learn to be relaxed, so we can get things done correctly and smoothly. Anxiety pops up in our mind when uncertainties about our objectives occur. It is normal and it happens all the time. We have to prepare ourselves for uncertainties. When this occur, it does not necessarily mean that we are going to fail. It is only a call for re-evaluation, re-alignment or adjustment. For as long as you know what to do and how to do it, you will never fail.
Don’t allow yourself to get affected by problems, directly or indirectly. When problem strikes you, it is the time that you need to think positively. It’s not always easy to remain optimistic when you are in the actual situation where you personally feel the pressure and the fear of losing the game. But keeping a positive mental attitude is the best first line of defense you can ever establish for your own spiritual, emotional, mental and physical protection. Or else, your negative feelings will let you down and that’s because you allow it to happen.
Negative mind will never accept good reasoning and it can destroy your person abruptly. You can compare it with a strong typhoon that leaves you the rubbles after a short but catastrophic pounding. To put up your best defense, it requires that you go back to the basics, to your original intent, to your main purpose. Don’t forget that based on your purpose you built your dream.
Stress is purely a mental problem. When the mind goes haywire, then the rest of your body will also do the same. You will become emotionally unstable when you’re under the throes of stress and you will mostly like feel the repercussions on your body, like muscle cramps, headache, and more stress symptoms. That happened to me for a while, just because I set my goal based on what is ideal, not on what is practical and doable. Don’t copy my mistake. Do not give yourself an ulcer when you are not meeting a deadline just because you set your schedule so tight without a room for errors. Even if you are doing a personal project like what I did, in your mind, be able to negotiate or make compromise for a doable plan and schedule. Apply the same with your boss or client.
You should be able to fight your stress if you want to succeed. You can achieve this by performing a meditation focused on managing stress. It is important that a person learn stress management techniques to get rid of it before it becomes permanent. But first, you need to know where your stress is coming from.
Stress Is All In Our Mind
The initial effect of stress is in our minds. It occurs when our normal mind patterns are disrupted. That would often lead to confusion. That would eventually affect us emotionally and physically when subjected to it for a long period of time. Stress is oftentimes caused by work and financial matters. Friends and family members can also become a source of your problem, especially when they go out of their way to create conflicts.
Since stress starts with the mind, then you need to take the necessary steps to control it with your mind. Relaxation which plays a major role in stress relief management is often the prelude to every other techniques to help you cope with the problem. We can never deny the fact that we can think clearly when we are at a relaxed state — we weigh each thought that passes through our minds calmly and rationally, whether it’s a problem or just some stray thought from the day’s events.
Meditation To Help You Relax
One way to help your mind relax is through meditation. This method can help you focus your mind clearly on a problem without getting distracted and come up with the right solution to get it out of your system. After all, a calm and focused mind can easily cope with stress.
There are two ways to do meditation — you can either enroll in meditation classes or you can do it on your own. The former is perfect for those who have plenty of free time to spare since meditation classes takes around 2 to 3 hours per session. You will be guided slowly by your mentor on the different exercises, both mental and physical, to help you relax.
If you don’t have the leisure due to the demands of work, then you can do it on your own while you’re in the office or in the convenience of your own home.
Here is a very simple meditation technique you can use so you can immediately start with your own meditation process:
There are different methods and tools you can use to start meditation on your own. You can listen to calm music or chant a mantra. You can buy books to help you achieve meditation through visualization techniques. Pick one that suits our taste and get started.
First find a quiet place to start your meditation exercise. If it’s your first time at it then make sure that you won’t get distracted with the noise in your surroundings. Lock your room or tell everyone that you don’t want to be disturbed.
Start with the meditation by looking for a place where you can sit down and relax. Don’t lie down since that will only put you to sleep before you can complete the exercise. Apply your own relaxation method if you already have one that you can use or you can start by inhaling and exhaling slowly and deeply for about one minute. As you breathe in and out, try to relax your muscles beginning from your feet up to your head. When you become relaxed, begin to focus on your mind. Concentrate on your mind and let random thoughts fill your head. Observe each thought calmly as if you are watching a movie. If a stressful scene comes out, try your best not to focus on it. Keep doing this exercise until you arrive at a time when your mind becomes blank.
Next is to think of one problem that you want to solve and focus on it. Again, don’t get emotionally attached to the image and only observe it in passing. You will eventually arrive at a solution to the problem without even noticing it.
That is a simple meditation technique for stress management. It is short but very effective. I want you to try it and eventually reap the benefits.
Finally, Start To Control Your Stress
I am sure you will agree that whether you are working on your personal goal or you are working on your company’s goal as a professional or career person, especially if you are the head of the team or handling a significant role in your team, a clear and relaxed mind has to be sustained, so that you can avoid making mistakes. Wrong decisions and impromptu choices are always the result of work stress. If your mind has gone berserk with a problem, then you can be sure that you will be making mistakes left and right without even knowing it. You can compromise your career, destroy a business, or even hurt those you love with your actions. If you want to avoid making mistakes, then you better learn anxiety stress management before its too late. To allow you to do that, let me share with you some powerful stress management tips to help you retain your composure and avoid making mistakes.
The best way to control stress is to have a calm and focused mind. You don’t need special skills or superhuman abilities to cope with stress — you only need your mind for that. A great way to achieve this is to know the cause of your stress and list them down so that you can tackle it one-by-one. It is not advisable to look at all your problems in one sitting since that will only lead to confusion, and eventually, more stress for you.
